Social Interactions

Although social interactions are an inherent characteristic of the human being, there are particularly differences between the way that Americans and Brazilians interact. First, the way that Americans greet each other is different than the way that Brazilians do. Americans usually shake hands to say hello, even if the person is not a strange. On the other hand, Brazilians do hugs and kissing on the face both for friends and strangers (or, more usually, a friend of a friend). Another point is about intimacy. Americans commonly preserve their own space. They do not like to be touched if the person has no intimacy with them. Brazilians use a lot of touch in their conversations and build intimacy much more faster than Americans do. Americans value the final product and are straightforward, whereas Brazilians are more likely to enjoy the time spent with the people around them. For instance, if two Americans are in a restaurant to talk about business, they will probably only talk about business, eat their food and leave. Pretty straightforward. In the same scenario, two Brazilians would first talk about their lives to each other, enjoy the meal having a nice conversation and, after the meal is finish, proceed to the business talk. Given that both American and Brazilians have the capacity to make awesome friends, the major difference between them probably lies in the time that it happens and in the degree of intimacy.

The Differences And Similarities Of The Food Style Between American And Chinese

Firstly, there is a similarity and two differences between Chinese and American breakfast. Both of the people from these places eat eggs and milk. Sometimes they have soy milk and bread. And for differences, Chinese have noodles and streamed buns. However, Americans just eat cereal and fruits with coffee. Secondly, there is no similarity of lunch and dinner. The difference is that people from China would like to have braised and streamed meat and vegetables. But most of American people are willing to have fried meat and raw vegetable as their healthy diet. Last but not least, both these two types of individuals have afternoon tea. Lips are the last step of make up and it plays a significant role. Red is a magic color that Chinese and American girls both love it. It can fit not only daily make up but also party looking. Except red, Chinese girls use orange tone and pink tone a lot. They prefer lip gloss or lacquer than lip stick. Lacquer is more moist than lip stick, so they can apply on center of lips and blending up to the edge. American girl like nude and purple more than Chinese girl. Obviously they love lip stick, because it can draw nice and heavy color on lip. They also use lipliner to clear the edge of lip. Those differences and similarities are caused by different culture and bone structure, but love of beauty has never change.

Education System in China and The United States

The education systems in China and the United States are different in certain ways, but they also share some commons. Both American education system and Chinese education system use the standardized test as a tool to evaluate students’ performances. Before students enter college, American students need to take the SAT. Similar to that, China has the college entrance exam called Gaokao. At the same time, each system has its unique characteristics that distinguish it from one another. First, teachers play different roles in these two countries. In China, teachers have absolute authorities in the school, so they gain a great deal of respect from students and parents. Most students agree on all the information which teachers teach in classes without any doubt. Teachers are strict with students in order to ensure they have a solid academic foundation. While in the United States, teachers tend to praise students most of time and avoid diminishing their creativities. Secondly, the atmosphere in class is different. In China, teachers’ lectures occupy most of the class time. Students have relatively few discussions with teachers and their peers. However, the class in the United States is more active. Students are encouraged to express their opinions and start the conversations. In conclusion, the education system in China and the United States can be differentiated from each other by observing teaching style and class mode, but both will help students to succeed.

Differences And Similarities

By Jinzhen Xu

There are some differences and similarities about food culture between the United States and China. Both America and China have many varieties of food. Beef and chicken are the meat that Americans like most, but Chinese people have more choices for meat such as lamb, fish, pork, and duck. For vegetables, American people and Chinese people have almost same types of choices. Lettuces, broccoli, tomatoes, and cucumbers are most common to see in both America and China. Chinese people have more cooking styles than American. Both American and Chinese people usually fry, bake, and boil food. Chinese people especially like to steam, and stew food. American cooks prefer to keep original taste of food. In the opposite, Chinese cooks like to put a lot of onions, garlic, gingers, and peppers to support cooking. Both American food and Chinese food are balanced about nutrition. However, the fried chicken and stewed pork are more attractive for people. Therefore, Americans and Chinese are easy to get fat and have hight risk of heart attack. People from all over the world think that neither Americans nor Chinese have good diet. To sum up, these similarities and differences make food cultures be colorful.

The Different Values Between Americans and Chinese

By Yunxuan wu

There is a huge difference in traditional Chinese and American values. It is reflected in many aspects in our daily lives. For instance, Chinese and American react differently when receiving gifts. In Chinese culture, receiver opens a gift after the giver is beyond the range of sight to show respect. In American culture, it is considered a social norm to open a gift in front of the giver. Such culture clash may seem very difficult for Chinese to adapt to. In Chinese culture, a gift embodies much more complexity than simply the joy of giving. A gift can be read as the social status of the receiver according to its monetary value and proper decoration. On the other hand, if the gift is not in favor of the receiver, opening gift after the giver is out of sight can be a gentle act of avoiding awkwardness. Secondly, there is a big difference in the notion of accomplishment between American and Chinese culture. Individuality is significantly stressed in American value as each individual should fulfill their own person goal through intrapersonal training. It can be reflected in the way of education: kids are taught to take care of themselves and be expressive. As a result, Americans are more independent comparing to Chinese. On the contrary, the notion of collectivity is the focus in Chinese value. It is taught that individuals should contribute for the world around him/her instead of satisfying personal desire; and the expression of feeling should be subtle. Hence, diminishing personal traits for a consensus on the outside becomes a phenomena. What's more, American tend to satisfy personal desire with money rather than saving for the future. Chinese has a tendency to save money to plan for the future. In conclusion, because of the difference in living environment, historical development, Chinese and Americans formed their own distinctive values, also known as the cultural difference.

Education in China and United States

By Meiling Wang

This paragraph will analyze the similarities and imparities between the education system in China and in United States. Both students in China and United States have to take several exams in order to get into university. Chinese students have to take the National Higher Education Examination, as same as American students who have to take SAT or ACT. In addition, students in China or United States, both have massive amount of homework to complete in order to understand the academic courses. In contrast, schools in China often post students’ score in public and rank the scores. However, schools in United States will only show the average score to students and parents. Moreover, schools in China have longer class time. In China, students have 6-9 classes per day. Students have to study by themselves in class till 9 o’clock. On the contrary, in United States, students always finish their class by 3:30pm. Unlikely, students in China, especially for primary students and high school students, they have to do the radio gymnastic everyday, which is mandatory. Some schools even grade the radio gymnastics on daily bases. On the other hand, students in United States do not need to do these exercises. In conclusion, both China and United States have similar university entering examination policies, however there many contraries in between them at the same time.

How is College in Brazil Compared to United States

By: Yasmin Rodrigues

Studying abroad is a great opportunity to understand the similarities and differences between Brazilian and American colleges. The classes are very similar, both Brazil and United States use technology in class. Most of the classes use PowerPointpresentations, projector and online tools. However, in Brazil, especially in public colleges the classrooms are not as comfortable as in USA, they do not always have air conditioning and the furniture is old. Another similarity is that the grade is divided according to what the teacher determines, so exams, reports and participation have different grades in percentages. Conversely, Americans have numerous homework and final projects, what does not happen in Brazil. Brazilians have more exams and if the final grade is below 60%, they fail in the course and have to retake it. Also, we do not have concepts like A, B+, B-, our grades are given in percentage. Brazilians and American students have similar life style. They dedicate a lot of time for college and frequently sleep Tiless than the necessary, especially on exams period. The main difference between them is about their behavior in class. Apparently students in USA are more attentive than in Brazil. It is very common to see Brazilian students being late, or leaving the class before it is over. On the other hand, Brazilian students are more participative in class. So, as an international student, it is very interesting to see the differences and similarities between these academic systems.

Food culture in China and The United States

This paragraph will discuss the similarities and differences between food culture in China and America. First, both Chinese and American care about nutritions. For example, In China, there are more and more organic food in the market even though the price of organic food is very high.

Also, Chinese and American are both love desserts and high calories food. Although desserts like chocolate lava cake and puddings contain lots of calories, Chinese people, like Americans, eat them once or twice a day. In China. people make Chinese desserts like Fried ice cream and Egg custard tart. However, there are also significant differences between American and Chinese food culture. People use totally different tablewares. In China, people use chopstick and spoon. They are very traditional tablewares in China. However, Chinese hardly ever use knifes because they do not eat steak and pizza in general. In addition, the taste of food is also very different. Most of Americans do not like spicy food at all. On the contrary, Chinese people like spicy food very much. For example, they have hot pot, Mapo Tofu and spicy chicken. In sum, people in United State and China are both focus on nutritions in food and eat a lot desserts, however, there are some differences between them like tableware and taste of food.

College Life and Style: Brazil and U.S.

By: Akemi Tanno

Different countries can have similarities and contrasts related to the college life and style, and here are some of them between Brazil and the United States. Both Brazilian and American colleges have the same class style, which, most times, includes Power Point presentations with theory and, sometimes, simple examples. Furthermore, both countries colleges has the same type of assignments, which are researches, reports, projects and class presentations. However, they are different when the topic is classes and homework, because Brazilian colleges have longer classes and almost no homework, while American colleges have shorter classes and much more homework. Moreover, Brazil's best colleges are those that are ensured by the government, which means that they are free. Although, in the U.S. the best colleges are paid, which is evident because they do not have free colleges at all. It is important to point that in a world ranking, the U.S. Universities have much higher placings, compared to the Brazilian ones. As the examples show, it is possible to see that the colleges in these countries have some different characteristics, but the essence is the same.

Similarities and Differences between Education Mode in China and the United States

Although the education mode in China and the United States both successfully provide high quality of workforce for the society, there are some similarities and differences between the two education mode. First, cheating is prohibited at school, and students will be punished or even expelled. Also, asking questions is encouraged at school. Professors are willing to answer students' questions and explain details patiently to them. In addition, GPA is important in both countries because it determines whether students could easily get high paid jobs when they graduate. However, there are also significant differences between education mode in China and the United States. In China, GPA is primarily determined by the final exam grade while in the United States, GPA is closely connected with daily attendance and performance in each quiz. Also, there is an old saying in China, “He who teaches me for one day is my father for life”. It reveals the high status of teachers in China. On the contrary, the relationship between professors and students in the United States is more like friendship. Besides, what the students are going to learn in college even the entire lives is decided by the National College Entrance Examination and cannot be changed easily. However, students in the United States have several chances to make a reversible choice. In summary, the education mode in China and the United States have quite many similarities and differences. Nonetheless, it is hard to say which one is better because they both work very well.

Junk Food vs Healthy Food

By: Sultan AlShehhi

Both fast food and healthy food are delicious. There is a large variety of food, for example you can imagine a pizza or salad fruits both are delicious. While fast food and healthy food can both be appealing, the best way to eat is by preparing our own food. Fast and healthy food differ in their convenience and effect on health. Fast food is more favorable than healthy food. Many people in the United States work for long hours and for that reason they don’t have to time to find ingredients and prepare good food. So fast becomes a good alternative because it's faster to make and quicker to purchase than healthy food. Healthy food is nutrient rich, but fast food tends to be nutrient poor although it is high in calorie. It is important to know that fast food fulfills our daily calorie need, but it exceeds with ingredients that are harmful to our health. For example, fast food is high in fat and trans fat and it also has chemicals, artificial colors and flavors. Fast food affects our health and causes dangerous diseases like diabetes, blood pressure. On the other hand, healthy food protects our bodies from diseases because it contains vitamins, and proteins. To conclude fast food is bad for you while healthy food is good for you, so eat healthy and choose what's best!

Differences and similarities about education mode between United States and China

By Yuxuan Zhang

Nowadays, there are numerous people go aboard to study in the United States, they want to experience the differences about the education system between America and China. First in both country, students must complete the test and pass the exam step by step in order to get into university. For example, Chinese student need to take "Gaokao" which is a Chinese traditional test and Americans have to take "SAT" as their way to university. They both have different sections to test student's ability. Second, American and Chinese professor both have teacher assistants, they are students who have the high score. However, these similarities can not represent they have the same education mode, because they are also have plenty of differences. First, the study atmosphere is different between two country. For instance in China, students can only toe the line by teacher and take notes in classroom. There are no chance for them to discuss in a group or have a presentation on class. But in United states, students have more freedom to ask questions which they do not understand in class. Also they do not have seating arrangements. Second is students in United states can choose the appropriate time, professor and class whatever they want, but students can only obtain by school in China. They have no authority to change their class and time schedule. Moreover, there are plenty of pro and con between two country, it can not change the increase tend that both country's university have high quality graduation students.

Different Countries, Different Education

By Wanzhen Li

As many Chinese students have been in Syracuse for about half a year, students deeply feel the similarities and differences in education systems between United States and China. First, homework is given in both countries. Teachers both ask students to read or write. However, the homework in the United States is more flexible than in China. In China, homework is always preview, review by students themselves. American teachers will ask students to cooperate with others and explore the outside world. It is really good for students to learn more. Second, listening to teachers is mandatory in both countries. In America, it is common that teachers teach and students ask questions in class when they feel confused. On the contrary, in China, it is only teachers teaching in class. Few teachers will give students time to ask in class, so sometimes we cannot understand teachers clearly. Third, in school, students all learn for their own purposes. In China, students learn for grades. Teachers and parents always tell students that grades can determine their future. It is true in some aspects. However, it will make students become study machines. On the contrary, American students learn new knowledge to improve themselves. Although grades are important, they pay much attention on self-improvement. Although education systems are different in two countries, if students can merge them together and absorb the quintessence, they will be more knowledgeable.

Different understanding about age between Korea and America.

By. Dongwhee Lim (Claude)

Age Is Just More Than A Number

There are huge difference between Korea and America about age. The understanding of age would be just a number in the states, but age is just more than a number in Korea. It is traditional Korean culture to respect anyone who is older than you. Koreans use different vocabulary like adding "-yo, -da, or gga" end of sentence for anyone who is older or anyone who need to show your respect. It is not a written law that all Koreans must bow or use honorific language to anyone who is old, but it is general concept for Korean people to respect old people. However, in America age is just a number, and people do not usually ask or care other people's age. Because age is not a huge issue in normal social life, anyone could be close friends with out using honorific language. Since there is totally different concept and understanding about age between Korean and America, there are not many similarities about age system. Being friends with same age of person could be one similar thing. It does not people in Korea could not be close with person with different age, but there is still words for older man and woman. For man, people should use "hyung" for older man and "noona" for older woman. For woman, people should use "oppa" for older man and "unniie" for older woman. Since People gets old as every new years(January 1st), there is not many confusion about counting ages which might make trouble. It is sort of classification with age in Korea which creates unique Korean culture. There are many different culture between Korea and America, but this age system would be one of  the most different system. Those military style in daily life built actual Korean culture. If you want to get a respect like Aretha Franklinfrom from "Dongsaeng"(a Korean word to define someone who is younger), it is your time to visit Korea for R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

America vs Ukraine: Social Life and Values

Albina Aliyeva

America and Ukraine are two great countries with rich history, however their social values are very different. The first difference which people notice from the first sight is the way people dress. Americans are very liberal about their clothes, they can go to breakfast wearing pajamas and feel comfortable in it, while in Ukraine it would be considered rude. Ukrainians always dress up no matter where they go- gym, lunch or theater, they always have to look good to impress others, while comfort is a priority for Americans. The second difference is shown in guys’ manners. In America, women want the equality that is why they don’t expect men to treat them like a “weak gender”, however because of it, guys in America seem to forget how men should behave. In Ukraine men seem more polite, they always open doors in cars for women, let them sit if there’s no place to sit, take off women's jackets when they get inside the restaurant and many other things. The last difference is in people’s relationship towards each other. In America everybody is going to be nice and friendly to you, therefore it is hard to say who is your real friend and who is fake. In Ukraine, if people don’t like you, they will not pretend that they do. In Ukraine there is no such thing as fake relationships between people, therefore there’s no that much gossips behind your back. These countries have a huge contrast between each other, however it doesn’t mean that one is good/right and one is bad/wrong, it just means that people in those countries have different values and priorities.

Values in America and China

By Yiru Gu

People with different personalities have various values and reflections on every single thing. However, culture can be a big element to cultivate their perspectives and values. Therefore, there are some similarities and differences between personal values in America and China. Both American and Chinese regard education as the fundamental demand of their children. Both of them provide compulsory education so no matter what finical condition people live in, they all receive knowledge equally. What is more, American build deeply concepts of family, which is same as Chinese. During the Christmas in America, wherever they are and no matter how busy they are, they will definitely back home and celebrate together, which is same as Chinese, people in China, during Chinese new year, always wait in line for several days in order to get a ticket to go home and enjoy family time.

The image represents how chinese family celebrate traditional new year festival shows."Chinese New Year2016" Image, www.Chinahighlights.com,www.Chinahighlight.com,October 19.2015.Web.11 Nov.2015.

However, there are some of ideas between each country are differ from each other. Firstly, the idea of money is an obvious difference between both countries. In china, most of people regard ' the most expensive' as ' the best one'. While, American believe that suitable is the best. Take car as an example, American take a car as just a transportation tool so when they select a car, they consider about how many people can be hold and fuel consumption problem. Unlike American, Chinese tend to show their social status and wealth by the car they drove. Therefore, more expensive car they drive means more rich they are. Also, they are not sharing the same way, when they raise their children. For chinese parents, they are more protective because of the only child policy. They help children to make bed, take shower and even have meal. Some college student who lives on their own for the first time, do not even know how to eat an egg with shell on it. Yet, American choose backyard raising which let their child figure out by themsleves so that the children will be more independent than others. Comparing values between American and Chinese, it is not easy to tell which is good or bad. However, after seeing through the differences and similarities, we can understand both cultural effects more deeply and comprehensivly.
